In stark contrast to the USA and Europe, China - with the world's largest population - has largely returned to normal life and has reported only sporadic coronavirus outbreaks since May. However, other researchers were not impressed with the findings. On the campaign trail in August ahead of the U.S. election, President Trump also said it was a "disgrace" that China had limited the spread of the virus at home but allowed it to reach the rest of the world. It has secured 100 million doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University and has targeted a rollout to begin before Christmas. The vaccine was 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 when administered in two different doses a month apart, late-stage trials showed. (more...)

The Department of Health says it has been notified of seven additional deaths related to COVID-19 today and 243 new cases of the virus. There were 100 deaths in total in the region, taking the overall toll to 1,333. Twenty more people have entered hospital with the disease in the last 24 hours. The United Kingdom is scheduled to approve the COVID-19 vaccine developed by BioNTech SE and Pfizer Inc next week and deliveries would begin within hours of the authorisation, the Financial Times reported on Saturday. Prof Wang has received funding from the World Health Organisation to search for the virus origin across Asia and beyond using a new method to screen animals and humans for prior infection to try to identify "intermediate hosts" that caused the virus to transmit from bats to humans. Malaysia signed an agreement with Pfizer Inc.to obtain its Covid-19 vaccine for 20% of the population, or about 6.4 million people, according to the nation's Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. The state Department of Health said they have been told to expect about 200,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine by the end of December.
