If many states continue to roll back the mandates in place, the team found, the number of deaths by February 28 could top one million, with one-third occurring in California, Florida and Pennsylvania. The spike in cases comes less than two weeks before the presidential election on November 3 and is hitting battleground states such as Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Toronto Public Health began accepting online bookings for its flu shot clinics on Tuesday but as of 9 a.m. this morning the first 11 clinics had already been fully booked, meaning that the earliest that anyone can get an appointment at a Toronto Public Health clinic is now November 12. (more...)

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 335 cases are in Toronto, 162 in Peel Region, 106 in York Region and 72 in Ottawa. The total number of lab-confirmed infections in the province is now 69,331, including deaths and recoveries. The province also reported another 72 new cases of COVID-19 in publicly-funded Ontario schools on Friday, 39 of them among students. Critics of challenge studies question the need to expose healthy people to the virus when the disease remains widespread and vaccine development is moving quickly. "Once that's done we will be ready to actually test vaccines head to head and compare different vaccines", he said. Dr. Jay Butler, deputy director for infectious diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Wednesday afternoon that the agency has noted a "distressing trend" in which coronavirus case numbers are "increasing in almost 75 percent of the country". Halton reported 35 new cases with no changes in hospitalization as the number remained at 8. There has been a reported 796 school-related cases in just two weeks, with 902 cases reported 14 or more days before that. A total of 514 out of 4,828 schools have now reported at least one case of the virus with five schools forced to close after an outbreak was declared. (more...)

The study looked at over 400 patients who were hospitalised due to COVID-19 to find out whether the treatment healed people with moderate disease but it found that "convalescent plasma showed limited effectiveness". The transfusions were of blood taken from COVID-19 patients who survived and included the antibodies their bodies produced to fight off the virus. But Biden pushed back, correctly noting that Trump has not explained how he would do this. Biden said he views health care as a right, not a privilege-a line that echoes the ideas that Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren frequently advocated during the Democratic primary earlier this year. Prior to receiving her vaccine at a flu shot clinic at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Thursday, de Villa pointed out that there are 500 local pharmacies providing flu shots this year in addition to healthcare practitioners. The change greatly expands the pool of people considered to have been exposed to the illness and therefore at high risk of contracting it.
