There were no new deaths Thursday, leaving the death toll at 189 for B.C. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and lead author Dr. Danuta Skowronski with the BC Centre for Disease Control say the serology study determined the level of antibodies in hundreds of blood tests. (more...)

A leader contender among nearly 100 prototypes now in development, the vaccine is being supported by the British government and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca. What the vaccine is not for: Curing someone who is now sick with the novel coronavirus . This trial has been successful on monkeys and rabbits and now its trial has started on humans as well. The Phase-III clinical trial is being conducted by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company at five sites in the capital and Al Ain. Inactivated vaccines are well known and have been used against diseases such as influenza and measles. The vaccine is developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Sinopharm secured approval for the trial in late June. (more...)

The NSW government has announced a number of COVID-19 restrictions will be returning. Yep, from Friday next week, the same reimposed restrictions on pubs in NSW will also be extended to clubs, restaurants, cafes, and all indoor hospitality venues. (more...)

Zydus Cadila begins human clinical trial of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate! It is also the only vaccine being developed in the country that has reached the human trials stage. "Safety and tolerability" of a vaccine is tested in phase I on a small group of volunteers. Speaking to a crowded room without wearing masks, three of 18 volunteers monitored over a month at the Sechenov University said they all had experienced few side-effects. (more...)

Leicester City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "I am not surprised by this decision but remain extremely frustrated that a sledgehammer approach is being taken to deal with an issue in a very small part of the city". How have local politicians reacted? Shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth, who is MP for Leicester South, told MPs: "If we still have to make further personal sacrifice to keep people safe and hunt this virus down with the lockdown, then so be it". Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott tweeted that locally, 30 of Ontario's 34 public health units are reporting five or fewer cases, with fully 19 of them reporting no new cases. Keeping emergency orders in place allows the government flexibility to ensure vulnerable populations are protected as many regions are about to move into Stage 3 of reopening, the government said. The SHA has ramped up their contact tracing in these areas, which helped reveal numerous new cases in the at-risk areas. In the province, 11 people are now in hospital - nine are receiving in-patient care and two are in intensive care. In a release, the SHA said it has identified additional people with COVID-19 in these areas, as a result of aggressive contact tracing. With an increase in transmission in southwest and west central Saskatchewan, Kaeding is asking everyone in the affected ... (more...)

An Orlando Health spokeswoman told the Orlando Sentinel that the organization is looking into how the 98 percent figure was reported. Hendry Regional Medical Center reported 164 positive tests and only two negative ones, for a positivity rate of 99 percent. (more...)

Walmart says all customers will be required to wear a mask

All Walmart stores will have Health Ambassadors, in black polo shirts, stationed at the entrance to remind customers without a mask of their new requirements. "Starting July 22, we will require all customers in all locations to wear a mask, joining our associates who continue to wear masks". Craig resident Lauren Samuelson was at Walmart without a mask but she said she would follow along with the new requirements. (more...)

Another record for monthly overdose deaths related to illicit drugs has been set in British Columbia. "For the second month in a row, this province has experienced the highest number of deaths ever as a result of illicit substances with 175 lives lost, leaving behind grief and frustration while this public health emergency carries on into its fifth year", said chief coroner Lisa Lapointe in a statement Thursday. He said the priority must be to get the R number - the rate at which the virus is transmitted - back below 1 after it rose to between 1.2 and 1.8. The vast majority of these pubs are small rural outlets run by families who are on first-name terms with their customers. Humans can get the plague if an infected animal or flea bites them or if an infected person coughs on them, according to Jefferson County Public Health. Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it was "carefully" monitoring a case of bubonic plague in China after being notified by the authorities in Beijing. (more...)

Two positive samples of eastern equine encephalitis, another mosquito-borne disease, have been reported in MA this year, both in the Pioneer Valley. In 2019, six of the commonwealth's 12 patients with the virus died from their infections. An estimated one in 150 infected people develop a severe, potentially fatal, illness affecting the brain and spinal cord.
