Singapore Steps Up Zika Fight After Confirming 41 Local Cases

Inspectors from the National Environment Agency visited homes in the suburban district where all the cases - mostly foreign construction workers - were reported, to check for potential breeding sites. Singapore said that as of August 28, the National Environment Agency had inspected about 3,600 out of an estimated 6,000 premises in the Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive cluster to check for mosquito breeding, and conducted ground checks in the vicinity. The AHA says that children between the ages of 2 and 18 should eat no more than 24 grams of sugar each day and drink no more than 8 ounces of sugary beverages per week. Now, these new guidelines make it much simpler to figure out-no more than six teaspoons or 25 grams or 100 calories a day. "A healthy breakfast of a low added-sugar, whole-grain cereal with a piece of fruit and a glass of low-fat milk would have about 1 gram of added sugar, [but] varies by the cereal". (more...)

He urged those returning from countries with reported cases of Zika infection to have themselves tested voluntarily at major hospitals. Of the 41 people confirmed on Sunday to have been infected, 34 have fully recovered. Malaysia and Indonesia have stepped up protective measures following the Singapore outbreak, intensifying checks on people arriving from Singapore and introducing thermal scanners at airports and border checkpoints. Clinton questioned in East Hampton today whether Trump will "try to convey a gravity that he hasn't done before or will he come in and try to insult" - admitting that she has to be prepared for anything. In it, she is also wearing a shirt that says "No hot sauce no peace!" "And who knows what that might be". According to the poll , many voters question Trump's reasoning with 52% speculating the returns show something the candidate may not want voters to know. (more...)

There was more heavy fighting Monday along the Turkey-Syriaborder, but two US allies seem more intent on fighting each other than ISIS. Both Turkey and the United States have ordered the main Kurdish fighting force, the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, to withdraw to the east bank of the Euphrates. (more...)

Since no approved vaccine is available, prevention of mosquito bites is the best way to avoid acquiring Zika. Most people infected with Zika do not exhibit symptoms or may display only mild symptoms. However, as the Wall Street Journal pointed out, this argument is unfounded: "Planned Parenthood simply isn't on the specific list of public health clinics and community health centers that will receive additional and immediate social-services block-grant funding in Zika-hit locales". Vancouver retailer Pirate Joe's were sued by Trader Joe's several years ago on the grounds that the Canadian store infringed upon the American store's trademark, but the case was dismissed in October 2013, according to the Guardian .
