South Africa now has 12 739 confirmed cases, while there have been 238 coronavirus related deaths in the country. According to the latest figures from the WHO, Africa has around 47,000 cases of Covid-19 and 1,488 deaths. An estimated 150,000 would lose their lives, but the authors say this number could reach 190,000. Researchers warn that the outbreak will divert precious funds away from major health issues which already kill hundreds of thousands of Africans every year, like AIDS, ... (more...)

It is being compared to Kawasaki disease - which is uncommon but affects children under five and causes a high temperature, a rash and swollen glands - and also toxic shock syndrome. Sunil Sood, a pediatrician at Cohen Children's Medical Centre in NY, told AFP that some children had very mild forms of illness, but about half of the patients that he and colleagues had seen had to be treated in intensive care for heart inflammation. Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization emergencies director, said on Wednesday that the virus that causes Covid-19 could become endemic like HIV, warning against any attempt to predict how long it would keep circulating. The virus has so far infected 4.3 million people worldwide and led to almost 300,000 deaths. He added that even if a vaccine is found, controlling the virus will require a massive effort. (more...)

Random sampling will be done in both urban and rural areas. And WHO's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged everyone to fight together.
