The state reported a total of 977 coronavirus patient deaths, and 19 health care worker deaths, in skilled nursing facilities, as of data through Saturday. Nursing homes and personal care facilities have been particularly hard hit by the virus. 4,693 tests were also conducted in the past day, inching closer to the 5,000 mark Governor Tim Walz was asking for before the state could begin to reopen more parts of the economy. Additional businesses will be allowed to reopen in phases two, three and four. The five boroughs still need to reduce the total number of new hospitalizations, while freeing up more hospital beds, and beds in hospitals' intensive care units before reopening, according to information from the governor's office. Science Alert says vitamin D is a fat-soluble compound that we get either from food or supplementation, or our bodies manufacture from the sun's rays. In the current research, they said vitamin D modulates the response of white blood cells, preventing them from releasing too many inflammatory molecules called cytokines which are produced in excess in patients with severe COVID-19. A new coronavirus test that can give results in minutes instead of hours just got approval from federal regulators, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration said Saturday. This means that negative results from an antigen test may need to be confirmed with a PCR test prior to making treatment decisions or to prevent the possible spread of the virus due to a false negative , the administration added. The US has seen more than 25,000 coronavirus deaths in elderly homes, with more than a fifth - about 5,300 - in NY, according to a count by The Associated Press. On Wednesday, the New York State Department of Health issued an alert , calling on hospitals to immediately report any cases to the department. To qualify, a region must have at least 14 days of declines in reported infections and be able to run 30 tests for every 1,000 residents. (more...)

The Whatcom Unified Command, the multi-governmental agency that's directing local pandemic response, has previously told The Bellingham Herald that the Whatcom health department does not track the number of recoveries because it is not a healthcare provider. There are now 3,962 active cases across the province of the 19,944 who tested positive, including 14,383 resolutions and 1,599 deaths, up 393 and 59 respectively. Nearly 42 per cent of cases are male, with 57.3 per cent reported in females. The provincial government is continuing plans to reopen parts of the economy in the coming days, with retail stores allowed to offer curb-side pickup starting Monday. (more...)

It will also need to be determined whether it's safe to inject people with llama antibodies in the first place. While humans produce only one kind of antibody, llamas produce two, and one of them is quite small. The antibodies did bind itself, but it did so "weekly". While the results of the study can be viewed as promising, the science and health community is still working to determine what may prove to be effective treatments for those infected with COVID-19. As of 10:30 am on May 8, Ontario is reporting 19,598 cases of the novel coronavirus in the province. Along with the new cases and fatalities, Ontario now has its least amount of patients in ICU in over month. There have been 67,608 confirmed and 11 presumptive cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Canada as of May 9 at 1:31 p.m., including 31,013 resolutions and 4,690 deaths. (more...)

The total number of cases has risen by more than 42 percent in the past week. Diseases that could be managed could easily become more complicated as a result. The new research also predicts a prolonged outbreak that could last for "a few years".
