Walla Walla County Department of Community Health Director Meghan DeBolt, who in an interview with the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin earlier this week called the gatherings "unacceptable" and "irresponsible", revised her previous comments in a new statement on Wednesday, saying those who attended the gatherings were not intentionally trying to infect themselves. People, who are over the age of 80, continue to be the hardest hit group. According to Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario relies on local public health units to report on the coronavirus , both in the community and in long-term care homes, through iPHIS, of which there is a delay in the data being received. Japanese health authorities on Thursday approved remdesivir for use against the novel coronavirus , piggybacking on the antiviral drug's US authorization in order to accelerate the process. Japan reached the decision just three days after the USA drugmaker filed for fast-track approval for the treatment. Of the 516 total deaths involving Covid-19 occurring up to May 1, 253 (49.%) occurred in hospital, 232 (45%) occurred in care homes, four (0.8%) occurred in hospices and 27 (5.2%) occurred at residential addresses or another location. Cuomo said if there is anything his administration can learn from how the nursing homes have been handled during the pandemic, they will make changes going forward and deal with the expected second wave of the virus later this year.
