According to the World Health Organization (WHO), three vaccine candidates are in the clinical testing phase, meaning they are able to be tested on humans , while almost 70 are in the preclinical phase - either in lab testing, or animal studies. The mayor of Wuhan has previously admitted there was a lack of action between the start of January - when about 100 cases had been confirmed - and 23 January, when city-wide restrictions were enacted. "Hopefully you can have China answering these questions that are reasonably put and people can have more confidence", Dutton says. BHS received its first round of donations on Wednesday, and is scheduling donations for the coming weeks. The number of COVID-19 patients who have died there has risen to more than 13,700, after another 861 deaths were recorded. Of those deaths, 375 have been in nursing homes, where there are still 1,713 COVID-19 cases. "We have the National Ambulance Service deployed to do mobile testing in nursing homes on the basis of a suspicious case and that is continuing but we are now scaling up to be able to test all residents and staff in nursing homes where there are confirmed outbreaks". The OHC also wants to ensure that staff who test positive for the virus are not required to work and should be under quarantine with support. British Columbia made a similar order weeks ago. As of Monday morning, Florida had 20,601 overall confirmed cases of the virus, and 470 residents had died. More staff will be hired, and there will be 24-hour screenings for staff and residents, as well as enhanced cleaning measures. (more...)

Patients who have not had a formal COVID-19 positive test are not eligible to donate plasma at this time, but researchers are working to potentially achieve this. She said that based on studies in China, where COVID-19 first emerged, those critically ill from the virus could have benefits from convalescent plasma therapy, on top of other treatments that have been given to coronavirus patients.
