There were no new locally transmitted cases Friday, which stands at 42, mostly in Miami-Dade and a couple in Pinellas and Palm Beach counties. The virus is particularly unsafe to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. The scientists warned that under-reporting significantly hampers the Indian health system's ability to know the true extent of the problem and thus adversely affects its ability to plan for it. "The study has shown that the number of cases in the private sector is higher than the public sector". So far, the FDA is asking blood banks in 11 states to begin testing for Zika within the next four weeks: Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina and Texas. The American Red Cross is working with the FDA and CDC to implement the new donation guidelines. The new recommendation expands the guidance to all USA states and territories. (more...)

According to NPR , none of the more than 2,000 Zika cases in the continental USA have come from tainted blood transfusions, but at least one unit of donated blood in Florida tested positive for the virus. Several testing sites are already voluntarily using the technology, including blood centers in Texas. She, however, also said that future rate increases should be "gradual". Yellen also noted that while inflation is still running below the Fed's 2 percent target, it is being depressed mainly by temporary factors. They say there has yet to be local transmission in Virginia, where someone becomes infected with Zika from being bitten by a mosquito within the commonwealth, but potentially all that would need to occur to make that happen would be a mosquito biting an infected person and then becoming infected with the virus itself before transmitting the virus by biting someone else. On Friday, DeLauro applauded to decision, calling it "a strong step forward in protecting our nation's blood supply and the American people". He said the test's accuracy meets the expectations set out by the FDA. From January 2016 through July, hotel stays by paying travelers were up 1.2 percent from a year ago, according to STR data.
