Bonnie Henry and Minister of Adrian Dix announced public health emergency is an additional step to ensure the province has more tools available to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Henry said at least four of the latest cases in B.C. are connected to a dental conference that was held in Vancouver on March 6 and 7, and that anyone from around the world who attended the event must self-isolate. According to Zhang Xinmin, the Avigan ( Favipiravir ) drug was found to be effective in two clinical trials completed in Wuhan and Shenzhen involving 320 patients. The drug was approved for use in Japan in 2014. Since February, Japan has been administering the drug to its coronavirus patients, now numbering over 800 cases excluding those found on the virus-hit Diamond Princess cruise ship. (more...)

The findings may have important significance for medical workers as well as the public. The study's title, " Aerosol and Surface Stability of SARS-CoV-2 as Compared with SARS-CoV-1 ", emphasizes that the study's authors compared the stability of the novel coronavirus to that of the original SARS virus. But the study found that SARS-CoV-2's backbone differed substantially from those of already known coronaviruses, and mostly resembled related viruses found in bats and pangolins. (more...)

A COVID-19 assessment centre opened in Barrie, Ont. on Monday. Ontario Premier Doug Ford is declaring a state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Charles Gardner said. In the latest remarks, Dr. Barbara Yaffe says Ontario has a total of 186 positive cases of confirmed COVID-19 and around 92% of those cases are related to travel or by being in close contact with someone with the illness.
