Counties in California and NY have begun declaring local emergencies. UC Davis confirmed early Thursday the patient, a resident of Solano County, was being treated at its medical center in Sacramento. The state is working with the CDC to make testing more readily available, he said. That's because of the imminent end of the isolation period for those passengers and the relatively small number of persons who ended up testing positive, officials said. (more...)

South Korea has reported the highest number of cases outside China , with 571 new infections on Friday, bringing the total to 2,337, with 13 deaths. California Gov. Gavin News told reporters on Thursday that California had just 200 testing kits left for the entire state. "This new case indicates that there is evidence of community transmission but the extent is still not clear", said Sara Cody, director of public health for California's Santa Clara County, the heart of Silicon Valley ... On Friday, Ontario confirmed another case linked to Iran, a man in his 50s who arrived in Toronto from Iran on February 25, and went to the emergency department at Sunnybrooke Health Sciences Centre the next day. On Feb. 26, Ontario health officials confirmed her husband, also in his 60s, had also contracted the virus, the province's first case of human-to-human transmission. (more...)

The new California patient is a 65-year-old with chronic conditions who had not recently traveled outside the country and who had had no known contact with a confirmed case, health officials in Santa Clara County said. More than 80,000 people have been infected worldwide and 2,800 have died, mostly in China, where the virus originated late past year. With loosening guidelines, California said it was working with the CDC to quickly expand its testing capabilities. (more...)

The first case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Wales after a patient from Swansea has been diagnosed with the virus. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United Kingdom climbed to 19 on Friday. Delta, which has a stake in Korean Air, announced it was temporarily reducing flights between the US and South Korea due to the outbreak. The carrier now flies the route five times a week. US President Donald Trump assured Americans on Wednesday the risk from coronavirus remained "very low" and was not immediately considering travel restrictions to and from countries such as South Korea and Italy that are dealing with outbreaks. The total number of cases in England is now at 17, and the first case in Northern Ireland was confirmed on Thursday. On Thursday, two patients in England tested positive for the virus. The Business Department and PHE recommended that the best way to reduce any risk of infection is good hygiene and avoiding direct or close contact (closer than two metres) with any potentially infected person. A British man has died from coronavirus, Japan's Health Ministry has confirmed.
