The illnesses in the outbreak, which first began more than two years ago, have been reported in Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. One of the cases in MI resulted in a death. At this time, the CDC is not advising consumers to avoid eating products prepared at delis, or for stores to stop selling deli-sliced products. Listeria is more likely to occur among pregnant women and newborns, adults age 65 or over, and people with weakened immune systems. (more...)

Simply put, the remaining makers of the mesh devices - Boston Scientific and Coloplast - failed to prove the long-term safety or benefit of their devices, the FDA said in a news release . The FDA action does not apply to surgical mesh used to treat other conditions such as hernias or incontinence . The agency reviewed data provided by manufacturers, and it did not find evidence that transvaginal mesh for POP works better than surgery without mesh to fix weakened pelvic muscles. (more...)

It might sound like Frankenstein , but it isn't, the scientists insist. Researchers say they've rebooted pigs' brains four hours after the animals died. For example, live cells can be harvested from postmortem brains and cultured in a dish. But individual cells, cleansed of the solution and tested for electrochemical responses, appeared to be quite active, and even in their pharmacologically-dulled state, the preserved brains showed " spontaneous synaptic activity ". The heart produced by researchers at Tel Aviv University is about the size of a rabbit's and is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers. The cellular and a-cellular materials of the tissue were then separated. The cells were reprogrammed into pluripotent stem cells, while the extracellular matrix of collagen, sugars and proteins were processed into a personalized hydrogel. (more...)

Neal asked the IRS last Wednesday to turn over six years of Trump's tax returns within a week. Neal's Saturday letter - addressed to Rettig, not Mnuchin - dismissed those concerns and set a new deadline of April 23 at 5 p.m. He said Treasury respects lawmakers' oversight duties and would make sure taxpayer protections would be "scrupulously observed, consistent with my statutory responsibilities" as the department reviews the request. "Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of ground beef supplied to grocery stores and restaurant locations where ill people ate", the announcement read. Anyone expericing symptoms of an E.coli infection are encouraged by the CDC to contact their healthcare provider "if you have diarrhea that lasts for more than 3 days or diarrhea that is accompanied by a fever higher than 102˚F, blood in the stool, or so much vomiting that ...
