The placebo pills, which are meant to be placed at the end of a 28-pill pack, were mistakenly placed at the beginning of the pack. Allergan said it was made aware of the error by a physician. Modern birth control pills that are lower in estrogen have fewer side effects than past oral contraceptives . The brown placebo pills should be the last four of the pack. (more...)

Scientists have found out that people under the age of 65 who sleep for five or less hours a day are at an increased risk of premature death compared to those who sleep six or seven hours per day. "The results imply that short (weekday) sleep is not a risk factor for mortality if it is combined with a medium or long weekend sleep ", the researchers wrote in the study. (more...)

Hepatitis A can be prevented with a vaccine, which is recommended for children older than one year and adults living in the areas most impacted. "We have asked them to give their monoclonal antibody for conducting a test in India to find out if it can neutralise the Nipah virus in humans". The WHO recommends avoiding contact with sick pigs or bats in endemic areas, as well as not drinking raw date palm sap as precautions against infection. (more...)

Experts believe drug residues likely passed from wastewater in treatment plants into the expanse of water off the coast of Washington. And while many contaminants are filtered out of wastewater before it's released into the oceans, wastewater management systems can't entirely filter out drugs. (more...)

For decades lung cancer rates have been higher in me, mostly due to tobacco use, but now an alarming new trend among younger women has cancer experts concerned. As a result, the historic pattern of higher lung cancer rates among men has flipped, with the rates now higher for the white and Hispanic women. "We have looked at smoking issues, and smoking patterns don't fully explain this". (more...)

Of the more than 6,000 participants enrolled in the trial, 1,191 actively engaged with their assigned program. For this study the team of researchers included 6131 smokers. The study did not identify which of the approximately 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke are responsible for this muscle damage. (more...)
