A second test, the IgM antibodies test, tests blood to see if the Zika virus has ever been present in the body. The state's Department of Health has confirmed a number of 499 cases of Zika virus, with 58 pregnant women and 413 involving people who developed it elsewhere and returned home. (more...)

The Obama administration will transfer more than $30 million from medical institutes within the National Institutes of Health to pay for the second stage of a Zika vaccine, officials announced Thursday. The declaration comes amid massive spread of Zika through Puerto Rico, infecting well over 6,000 people, including over 520 pregnant women. Minister of Health Dr Christopher Tufton said, "These community meetings will provide updates on Zika and give residents the opportunity to get more clarification on any issue related to the virus as we move to reinforce the need for individual responsibility". Thursday's new travel-related cases mainly involve residents in Broward County with 17 new confirmations there. Many people with Zika may not know they have the virus as symptoms are usually mild. Local mosquito transmission means that mosquitoes in the area are infected with zika virus and are spreading it to people. Women and men who traveled to an affected area should wait at least 8 weeks before trying for a pregnancy; men with Zika symptoms should wait at least 6 months . (more...)

After hitting the upper 90s Friday , high temperatures in the Eugene area are expected to reach 96 degrees Saturday , the National Weather Service is forecasting. It causes mild, flu-like symptoms in most people, but can cause severe brain-related defects, including disastrously small heads, if women are infected during pregnancy. Health officials urge everyone who travels to an area with known outbreaks of Zika virus to take appropriate measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as wearing long trousers and shirts, staying in places with air conditioning, and using mosquito repellents.
