US Declares Public Health Emergency in Puerto Rico Due to Zika Virus

This region of the United States does not have the type of mosquito that carries Zika, but it is advised to avoid more bites because there isn't enough evidence and testing to totally rule out another infection once being treated. In April, Obama transferred $510 million in unspent funds earmarked for the Ebola outbreak to the fight against Zika. The U.S. surgeon general is urging Puerto Rico on Thursday, Aug. (more...)

The virus has been shown to cause birth defects, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged pregnant women to avoid unnecessary travel to the impacted area. It does not cause serious complications in adults, but the virus can cause severe brain defects and microcephaly in newborns. In a news release issued Thursday, the Governor's office says DOH has concluded that there are no local transmissions of Zika in the now-cleared area of the Wynwood neighborhood. (more...)

Three suspects are in custody after a Hatch police officer was shot during a traffic stop Friday afternoon, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office. They were caught after police pursuers deployed a tyre deflating device and blew out the car's wheels, causing it to crash, and forcing the suspects to surrender. (more...)

The public health emergency declaration is a tool for the federal government to provide fresh support to Puerto Rico's government to tackle the outbreak and grants access to certain federal funds. Thankfully - so far at least - the Zika virus outbreak doesn't seem to be having that effect. The Republican legislation also would siphon off unused money under President Barack Obama's signature 2010 healthcare law to combat Zika. (more...)

United States health authorities on Friday (Aug 12) declared a public health emergency in Puerto Rico due to the outbreak of Zika, which has now infected more than 10,000 people. Puerto Rico also will now be able to request the temporary reassignment of local public health department or agency personnel who are funded through Public Health Service Act. (more...)

Puerto Rico's health department reported Friday that 10,690 people had been infected with the mosquito-borne virus in the last seven months. Florida has reported homegrown Zika transmission by mosquitoes. HHS made the declaration at the request of Alejandro García Padilla, governor of the US commonwealth. Zika had already spread fast already across Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, central America and the Caribbean. (more...)

Global health officials suspect a connection between pregnant woman catching the virus and a birth defect called microcephaly in newborns. The Table Tennis Women's Team, Li Jiawei, together with Feng Tianwei and Wang Yuegu, also won the bronze medal, after beating South Korea team. "I think a lot of this is because of Michael". The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say Aaron Driver , an Ontario resident, recorded a video pledging allegiance to ISIS and threatening an imminent suicide attack. He ended up exploding a bomb in the back of a taxi just seconds before police opened fire. In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Montreal, a young man drove his auto into two soldiers in a parking lot, killing one of them before being shot dead by police after a short chase.
