The girl, who died a few weeks ago, had microcephaly linked to the Zika virus , said Dr. Umair Shah, executive director of Harris County Public Health. Zika is primarily transmitted by certain types of tropical mosquitoes and can cause severe brain-related birth defects. An adviser to the health ministry, Dr Amir al-Mukhtar, said "there had been 20 babies inside the maternity unit when the fire erupted around midnight". The hospital staff then told him to check the morgue. "Then someone broke a window and threw me out". The drug is now listed on Schedule I , meaning that it is viewed as having "no acceptable medical use in treatment", and is therefore banned in the United States. The federal listing is independent of state regulation.
