Bird flu cases have been detected at two poultry farms in Japan , though it is not clear yet how pathogenic the cases were. In Niigata, the local government confirmed earlier in the day that the highly virulent H5 strain was detected in birds at a chicken farm, where about 40 of them were found dead Monday, culling some 310,000 chickens at the farm. As another winter approaches, more bird flu outbreaks are being reported. Authorities began culling about 310,000 chickens in one of the farms in Niigata prefecture on Tuesday, a day after starting on 16,500 ducks in another farm in Aomori prefecture. The H5N8 strain of the virus is highly contagious among poultry. Earlier this month, Israel reported an H5N8 outbreak at a large poultry farm, and about a week later Iran reported two H5N8 outbreaks in commercial layer farms. (more...)

Signs a bird may be infected with avian flu include sudden death, loss of appetite and an unexplained drop in egg production.
