The state Department of Health said in a news release Monday that the new cases of the mosquito-borne virus are in Forrest, Hinds, Jackson and Lamar counties. Suffolk County reported five human cases in 2015, one in 2014, and four in both 2011 and 2013. Lamar County has had three cases. The number of human cases of West Nile virus varies each year. The Nobel assembly at the Karolinska Institute made a decision to award the 2016 prize to Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy . "Indeed, autophagy manipulation may provide a key strategy for treating some of these conditions", Rubinsztein said. Morris cautions residents to get rid of any standing water both in and around your house. It is believed the "angel of death" killer may have been injecting disinfectant into the intravenous drips administered to patients, after autopsies revealed two elderly men who died last month had been poisoned. Worried Hospital staff claim there have been no outbreaks of infection which could account for the deaths. Now fears are growing that a serial killer is on the loose after it emerged 46 other patients have died on the same hospital floor since July. (more...)

Research about integrating autophagy is conducted in order to create drugs that will target various diseases such as Diabetes, Parkinson's disease and cancer as the committee has discussed. Past year the prize was awarded to three researchers who have developed treatments for malaria and other tropical diseases. By studying thousands of yeast mutants he identified 15 genes essential for autophagy which turned out to be virtually identical to the mechanisms that exist in human cells. (more...)
