Health experts are unsure why the virus detected in Africa in 1947 but unknown in the Americas until past year is spreading so rapidly in Brazil and neighboring countries. Zika virus often produces flu-like symptoms like fever, headaches and joint pain as well as skin rashes and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The virus was originally discovered in the 1940's in a monkey located in the Zika Forest in Uganda, but it wasn't until 2007 that multiple human cases presented themselves. (more...)

Workers in Brazil are going door to door encouraging and educating residents about how to clean up standing water, which provides ideal breeding ground for the Zika-carrying mosquitoes. She was likely infected while living in Brazil, Hawaii health officials said. "So, we don't know a lot about it. It's not characterized well like dengue or chikungunya that has been around". Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. According to the Florida Department of Health , one case is out of Hillsborough County from a person who traveled to Venezuela. Two cases of Zika virus in Florida have been confirmed to be in Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Department of Health. An IDPH spokesman would not say where in IL the infected pregnant women live, and would ot disclose their ages. (more...)

In the Chichester School District, home to six Delaware County schools in Upper Chichester, Marcus Hook, and Lower Chichester, the superintendent's office received a call shortly before 10 a.m. The person stated that he or other suspects were armed on the roof of the schools, intending to harm students and faculty. Almost 120,000 turkeys have been killed on four farms so far, with six farms with about 121,000 turkeys left to euthanize. The Indiana State Department of Health is working with the Dubois County Health Department to monitor the health of workers who have had contact with infected birds to ensure they are healthy and verify that the H7N8 virus has not transmitted to people. Although travel to Zika hot spots still poses the most significant risk to Minnesotans, it's possible that the virus could spread locally under the right circumstances. There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending pregnant women who have recently traveled to areas where Zika virus is transmitted be screened for the mosquito-borne disease. The study subjects were given a controlled diet, which contrasts with what happens in the real world when people are sleep deprived. On one occasion, the participants were allowed to sleep normally - which typically entailed spending 8.5 hours in bed for four nights. The same group of men was also advised to sleep 8.5 hours for four nights as well for comparison. (more...)

Brazil's health ministry in November confirmed the Zika virus was linked to a fetal deformation known as microcephaly , in which infants are born with smaller-than-usual brains. Zika is a disease spread by mosquito bites, but is not transmitted human to human. State health officials say there are no locally acquired cases of the Zika Virus in Florida. (more...)

But women planning to have children soon should consider the risks when traveling to affected areas. In December, Brazil was the epicenter of a surge in newborn microcephaly, resulting in more than 2,400 cases and the unprecedented recommendation from health officials there that women don't get pregnant.
