The New Statesman and Foyles present: the 2016 Man Booker Prize Winner Paul Beatty in conversation with the NS culture editor Tom Gatti : Foyles, London WC2, on Friday 28 October at 7pm. Earlier this year The Duchess handed out awards to finalists of BBC Radio 2's 500 Words competition, seeking to encourage children aged 13 and under to compose a piece of fiction of no more than 500 words. "I can't vote for Trump". In the new poll, 77% say that whoever loses after each state has officially certified its vote for president has an obligation to accept the results and concede. (more...)

The Sellout's contemporaneous themes of race relations within the USA comes at a time of significant upheaval following the deaths of several black citizens in police-related incidents in the past year. The narrator of The Sellout is a black man from a small town on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Though Beatty cites satirists Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut as formative influences, he remarked to The Paris Review that he was 'surprised that everybody keeps calling this a comic novel... Three straight days when the Knicks can acclimate themselves to each other in ways they were simply unable to during the actual exhibition season, with Joakim Noah spending some time watching, with Derrick Rose spending two weeks in California.
