Queen Elizabeth hosts President Biden at Windsor Castle

US President Joe Biden and US First Lady Jill Biden stand beside Britain's Queen Elizabeth II to watch the military march past at Windsor Castle in Windsor west of London

PRESIDENT Joe Biden says the Queen reminds him of his MOTHER - after taking tea with the monarch at Windsor.

The visit included a Guard of Honour and afternoon tea with the monarch.

The president also confirmed that he invited her to visit the White House.

The queen has stoically continued with her official duties since then and met Biden alongside other world leaders and their spouses on Friday at the G-7 summit, by the seaside in Cornwall, southwest England.

She had met Biden and his wife, Jill, at the summit of G7 leaders on Friday, hosting a reception at the Eden project eco-visitor attraction.

In bright sunshine, the 78-year-old United States leader's Marine One helicopter landed at Windsor Castle, west of London, after the three-day G7 summit in Cornwall, southwest England, wrapped up.

The couple landed in the grounds just before 5pm, a few minutes ahead of schedule, and were greeted by the Queen in the castle's quadrangle.

The Queen has not travelled overseas since 2015 when she went to Malta with her late husband Prince Philip.

The whole visit lasted just over an hour and is believed to have overrun by 10 minutes.

Following the visit to Windsor, the first lady returns to Washington, D.C. The president travels on to Brussels for two days of meetings with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Commission leaders, and then to Geneva, where he'll conclude his weeklong trip with a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"I said we could fit the White House in the courtyard", the president disclosed to reporters waiting on the Heathrow tarmac for news of the conversation. She was very generous. "I don't think she'd be insulted", he later told reporters of his visit, "[but] she reminded me of my mother".

The visit comes after a hard year for the monarch and just three days after what would have been her husband's 100th birthday. He added: "Anyway, she was very gracious".

Biden stood next to the queen in the sunshine, wearing his aviator sunglasses, before inspecting the troops in the quadrangle of Windsor Castle, last seen on television during the somber funeral ceremony of her husband, Prince Philip, who died aged 99 in April.

And on Saturday, she reviewed a scaled-down Trooping of the Colour, also at Windsor, as part of her official birthday celebrations.

It was the second consecutive year that her official birthday was marked at Windsor Castle, rather than on Horse Guards, due to the pandemic.

The Queen, 95, first met a serving USA president, Harry S Truman, as Princess Elizabeth in 1951. President Lyndon B Johnson is the only one who did not make her acquaintance while he was in office.

They are Donald Trump in 2018, Barack Obama in 2016, George W Bush in 2008 and Ronald Reagan in 1982. Biden returned to the dais and he, the first lady and the white-gloved woman who has held the British throne for almost 70 years watched the military march past before they went inside for tea.
