Kamala Harris to visit U.S.-Mexico border, assess migration

But I don't think our view is that the vice president making a trip to the border with the Secretary of Homeland Security to assess and take a look at progress that's been made is going to prevent or change what the former President of the United States says when he goes to the border in a couple of days.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki reminded reporters Wednesday that she, and the vice president, have said that "when it is the right time", Harris "may go to the border".

Harris hasn't visited the border yet, and the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border continues to sky-rocket.

Trump issued a statement in response to Harris' announced visit, saying "After months of ignoring the crisis at the Southern Border, it is great that we got Kamala Harris to finally go and see the tremendous destruction and death that they've created-a direct result of Biden ending my very tough but fair Border policies".

Almost 3,300 migrants stranded in Mexico since January due to a US border policy have been kidnapped, raped, trafficked or assaulted, according to a report by a human rights group released on Tuesday.

But Harris and White House aides in Washington were forced to parry repeated questions from the press about why she left a border visit off the trip. Shortly after the news of Harris' visit began circulating, Trump released a statement claiming that if he and Abbott "weren't going there next week, she would have never gone!"

Harris visited Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month, as the White House attempts to address the supposed "root causes" of the border crisis while deflecting on domestic policy concerns and remedies.

The trip will take place several days before former President Donald Trump accompanies Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to the border.

After Biden reversed or altered a number of key Trump-era policies upon entering office, the border situation worsened quickly. Over 6,000 children at one point were in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is not equipped to care for minors.

"We made an assessment within our government about when it was an appropriate time for her to go to the border", Psaki said.

On her visit to Guatemala and Mexico this month, she urged Central Americans not to try to reach the USA border.
