Delta hot spots targeted for second dose

This 'vaccibus' is now making the rounds in the Outaouais delivering both first and second doses

Science table co-chair Dr. Adalsteinn Brown did, however, stress during a press conference that such a scenario is "highly unlikely" and would only happen with a 100 per cent increase in transmission.

The data also shows testing numbers have dropped.

Ontario is to release new COVID-19 projections today on the eve of its economic reopening.

"The Delta variant is more transmissible and may cause more severe illness", said Dr. Juli Emili, associate medical officer of health for the region.

A second dose of the vaccine adds 50 per cent effectiveness, officials said.

"This is not a doomsday scenario ..."

To avoid a fourth wave of COVID-19 driven by the Delta variant, Ontario must ensure first and second vaccine doses are getting to high-risk communities, according to new modelling.

Individuals in hot spots within Halton, Peel, Porcupine, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph and York public health units will be eligible to book their second Pfizer or Moderna doses through the provincial booking system as of 8 a.m. on June 14.

"I think it is critical to try to get that first dose into as many people as we can across the province and accelerate that second dose into high Delta risk communities so we can protect against the kind of surge we have seen in the United Kingdom", Brown said.

In a best case scenario, Ontario's daily COVID-19 case count will remain under 500 during the summer. With 180,000 vaccines per day, that number would be at around 1,500.

In a worst case scenario, cases will spike to 2,500 per day by the middle of August.

This contact will provide them with an Ontario vaccination record and also give public health officials with a fuller picture of vaccination rates in the province.

The province administered 182,350 doses Wednesday and nearly 10.63 million doses in total.

There are nearly 1.4 million people fully-vaccinated with double doses of vaccine.
