Texas: At least 13 wounded in downtown Austin shooting

"We have a total of 11 people transported to one hospital, one was transported to a different hospital and one person reported to an Urgent Care Clinic". © Austin Police Department via AP Chief of police Joseph Chacon provies an update on overnight shootings in Austin, Texas, June 12, 2021.

Authorities confirmed to Plohetski that investigators were working just after noon Saturday to confirm the identities of the two suspects and arrest them.

Chacon also said some officers transported patients to hospitals in their police cruisers due to the nature of the scene, where it was hard to contain the crowd and get ambulances to those who were injured.

Chacon commended officers' quick actions - he said they ran to victims, applied tourniquets and performed CPR - which he said played a role in avoiding fatalities.

Dewitt Peart, president and CEO of the Downtown Austin Alliance, said in a statement, "We are saddened that Austin has joined the far too lengthy list of communities that have experienced mass shootings".

The shooter, or shooters, were not immediately apprehended, NBC News reports.

They added that the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, although an investigation was still ongoing.

Six people were taken to a hospital by the Austin Police Department, and the Austin-Travis County EMS brought in four others for medial treatment, Chacon said.

Investigators were reviewing surveillance video and other evidence from the area, Chacon said.

Austin regularly suffers from gun violence, including in April when a rogue detective killed three people on a murder spree before going on the run. He was released from custody after posting a $100,000 bond. The shooting happened in the 400 block of East Sixth St.

A wider epidemic of deadly shootings is now gripping American cities, with a New York City man fatally shot in the head Friday morning.

Samuel Cassidy, 57, shot dead nine Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) employees in the early hours of May 26, before he turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
