Child among 3 dead in shooting inside the Publix in Royal Palm Beach

Three people were killed, including a child, during a shooting at a Florida Publix grocery store early Thursday afternoon, according to local officials.

"Upon arrival deputies located three individuals deceased from gunshot wounds, one adult male, one adult female and one child", the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay, who represents the area, said in a statement she was told the child was a toddler.

"Detectives are in the beginning stages of determining what led up to the shooting", she added. "You don't like to hear about them anywhere in the country", McKinlay said, according to WPTV.

Congressman told Scripps Station WPTVThe shooting at the store on the corner of Royal Palm Beach Boulevard occurred shortly after 11:30 EST.

The Sheriff's Office at Palm Beach said in a tweet that the incident was "not an active shooter situation".

But they said it was not an active shooting situation. I just can't believe this has happened inside the store.

In a statement obtained by WKMG-TV, a spokesperson for the large grocery store chain said, "Our thoughts are with those who are impacted by this tragedy". All additional questions should be forwarded to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Royal Palm Beach is a middle-class suburb of 40,000 residents, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) inland from Palm Beach.
