The Stresa-Mottarone cable auto line advertises a panoramic, 20-minute trip up the mountain from its base at the lake, offering a view of a total of seven lakes at the peak.

A local hospital spokesman said the two Biran children had been seriously injured and taken by helicopter to a pediatric hospital in Turin.

Local media say the cable auto line resumed operation on Saturday after temporarily closing due to coronavirus restrictions.

Italian Infrastructure Minister Enrico Giovannini said he had "already launched the procedures to establish a commission on what happened, and the checks on the controls that were carried out in the past on the implant", while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted " Europe's condolences" for the "tragic accident".

At least 14 people have been killed after a cable vehicle plunged down a slope in Italy. In December another visual check was performed, the ministry said.

Mottarone reaches a height of 1,491 meters (4,900 feet) and overlooks several picturesque lakes and the surrounding Alps of Italy's Piedmont region.

The trip up the mountain from the base at the lake features a cable vehicle to get up halfway and then a chairlift to reach a small amusement park, Alpyland, further up that has a children's rollercoaster offering 360-degree views of the scenery.
