Harris and President Joe Biden greet their staff after speaking on updated guidance on mask mandates in the Rose Garden of the White House

The CDC on Thursday said fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks or social distance in most situations. Andrew Cuomo said late Thursday. "Eventually everything will open up and we can be without masks".

It also offers a clear reminder of the progress that has been made on tackling the virus from when Biden first took office when more than 3,000 were dying each day in the United States and Biden repeatedly pleaded with Americans to wear a mask.

That means masks still are required in NY state when a person can't maintain six feet of social distance - even outside and even if the person is vaccinated.

Some store owners tell News 12 that they will wait to see what the governor decides when it comes to the mask mandate. "You will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in USA transportation hubs such as airports and stations".

'We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy, ' she said.

People who are immune-compromised are advised to talk to their doctors before taking off masks.

A survey released in April by the Birmingham Business Alliance showed that 51% of Birmingham-area businesses surveyed plan on continuing to require employees to wear face masks once the order is over, with 49% saying masks will be gone.

Joe Biden said it was 'a great day for America'. Individuals travelling within the U.S.do not need to be tested or self-quarantine.

"We haven't enforced the mask rule lately, people are vaccinated, but I personally feel better with it on, so I really do wish customers would keep them on", Jennifer Moes said. Dr. Walensky says they could be changed if case numbers were to get bad again. Walensky called Thursday's announcement a first step, but cautioned that unvaccinated people and children are still urged to wear masks, and that mask mandates could remain in place in parts of the U.S.

"In our travel guidance, we also have a travel policy, a national travel policy, so we need to have an inter-agency discussion about how that policy is going to be revised in the context of the new guidance", she said.
