Former President Trump breaks big tech stranglehold by launching personal platform

What you need to know about the board deciding Trump's fate on Facebook

Former President Donald Trump has launched his own online platform.

"In a time of silence and lies / A beacon of freedom arises / A place to speak freely and safely / Straight from the desk of Donald J. Trump".

Trump's ban from Facebook and Instagram came a day after a mob of Trump's followers attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in a failed attempt to thwart Congress from sealing Joe Biden's victory.

Facebook exempts politicians' posts and paid ads from its third-party fact-checking program, though it did start affixing some separate labels, for example, notices about voter fraud rarity on some of Trump's posts around the election. CBSN is now available on and the CBS News app across more than 20 platforms, as well as the Paramount+ subscription service.

Gautam Hans, a technology law and free speech expert and professor at Vanderbilt University, said he finds the Oversight Board structure to be "frustrating and a bit of a sideshow from the larger policy and social questions that we have about these companies".

Launched in November 2014, the service is a premier destination for breaking news and original storytelling from the deep bench of CBS News correspondents and reporters.

Both Facebook and Twitter have called for input on their rules after facing intense scrutiny over their handling of US presidential election and the storming of the Capitol by pro-Trump supporters.

"The board's analysis and reasoning in this instance could very well help shape the policies of Facebook and other digital platforms regarding how to treat political leaders and other public figures in the future", she said. Since the social media ban took effect, Trump's way of communicating with his supporters and journalists alike has been limited to emailing out press releases.

Alphabet Inc's YouTube has said it will restore Trump's channel when it decides the risk of violence has decreased.
