Bill And Melinda Gates Announce Divorce After 27 Years Of Marriage

Bill and Melinda Gates are ending their marriage after 27 years, the pair announced in a statement on their verified Twitter accounts. They said in the statement that they'll continue to work together at the massive philanthropic foundation they built to improve global health, combat climate change and bolster US education.

Bill and Melinda, in the statement, urged everyone to give them space and privacy for their family as they begin to navigate "this new life".

In identical tweets, they said they had made the decision to end their marriage of 27 years.

In her 2019 memoir, "The Moment of Lift", Melinda Gates wrote about her childhood, life and private struggles as the wife of a public icon and stay-at-home mom with three kids.

The couple's sprawling Seattle-based foundation is easily the most influential private foundation in the world, with an endowment worth almost $50 billion.

When they finally got married in 1994, he was 38 and she was 29.

Their philanthropy issued almost $55 billion in total grant payments through the end of 2019, focusing on addressing the inequities in global health and USA education systems.

The Gateses met at Microsoft, where Melinda worked developing multimedia products for the company. Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975 alongside Paul Allen, who died in 2018, and remained CEO until 2000.The pair famously made a decision to get married after weighing the pros and cons of their potential nuptials on a blackboard.

Last year, Mr Gates, formerly the world's richest person, said he was stepping down from Microsoft's board to focus on philanthropy. "He served as Microsoft's chairman of the board until February 4, 2014". The divorce, which was finalized in June, left MacKenzie with a four percent stake in Amazon-or around $38 billion, making her the third richest woman in the world.
