Police: 1 killed, 2 wounded in shooting at N.Y. grocery store

Wilson was wearing all black and carrying a small handgun as he fled westbound on Hempstead Turnpike, Ryder told reporters at a news conference in a nearby parking lot.

Police say a 49-year-old man is the person who was killed in the West Hempstead shooting.

NBC 4 NY notes the shots were fired in the Stop & Shop grocery in West Hempstead, leaving one dead and two injured.

One employee was killed and two others were injured in a shooting allegedly carried out by a coworker at an office of a Stop & Shop supermarket in West Hempstead, New York, on Tuesday, police said. One of the victims died at the scene; the other two were taken to the hospital.

Ryder says the shooter was employed at one time there, but it's unclear if he was still employed at the location.

Gabriel DeWitt Wilson is someone "we believe is the shooter", Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said before Wilson was taken into custody.

The suspect has been identified as Gabriel Dewitt Wilson, an employee at the store.

More than 150 police officers flooded the streets as neighbors and area schools locked down and sheltered in place as the manhunt was underway.

"They told us to just run and get out, and that's what we did", shopper Laura Catanese told News 12 Long Island.
