India surpasses 100,000 daily COVID-19 infections for the first time as politicians stage massive election rallies

The death toll increased to 1,65,101 with 478 daily new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The previous high was registered on September 17 past year, when the country reported 97,894 positive cases. The government began a one-week nationwide lockdown on Monday after a record number of daily infections was reported. Maharashtra reported a record 57,074 new cases overnight.

With 103,558 new infections, India has now reported 12.6 million cases, the highest after the United States and Brazil, data from the health ministry showed. There are 6,91,597 active cases in the nation as of now.

India's previous daily high in cases was 97,894, hit in mid-September and after which infections had come down sharply, only to rise again starting late February as the economy reopened fully and new virus mutants spread.

As India continues to witness a spike in COVID-19 cases, the last one week data of new COVID-19 cases and deaths in the country is as followed -- on March 30 (56,211 cases and 271 deaths), March 31 (53,480 cases and 354 deaths), April 1 (72,330 new cases and 459 deaths), April 2 (81,466 cases and 469 deaths ), April 3 (89,129 cases and 714 deaths) and April 4 (93,249 cases and 513 deaths).

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research", the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

A total of 11,66,716 samples tested for Covid-19 as of Saturday taking the total sample tests so far 24,81,25,908.

The 10 high burden states and UTs are contributing 91.4 percent of the total cases and 90.9 percent of the total deaths in the country. More than 49,000 cases were reported in Maharashtra yesterday and more than 5800 new cases were reported in Chhattisgarh.

Karnataka: 10,15,155 total cases, 12,625 deaths, 9,63,419 recoveries. Madhya Pradesh reported 3,178 new cases.

A brief presentation on the performance of COVID-19 vaccination drive was also made wherein details of vaccination drive in various groups, performance compared to other countries, and analysis of State-wise performance were discussed.

7,59,79,651 vaccine doses were administered in India till 8 am on Sunday.

Hopes at the start of the year that the outbreak may be subsiding in the vast nation of 1.3 billion people have been dashed in recent weeks with a fresh wave that has pushed the national total to 12.5 million infections and 165,000 deaths.

The third phase of its vaccination drive with everyone above the age of 45 eligible for the jab was launched on 1 April.
