Feds Raid Giuliani's Manhattan Apartment

The search warrant is a sign that the criminal investigation is ramping up into his dealings in Ukraine, including whether he violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which states that agents representing the interests of foreign powers in a political capacity must disclose their relationship to the US Justice Department. Details of the reasons for the search were not immediately available.

The official who confirmed the execution of the search warrant did not have approval to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that federal investigators have executed search warrants at Rudy Giuliani's Manhattan residence and office.

The Times characterized the raid as a "major turning point" in the investigation into whether Giuliani broke federal laws in his capacity as Trump's lawyer by lobbying the Trump administration in 2019 on behalf of officials and oligarchs in Ukraine.

A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Here we go folks", tweeted Michael Cohen, a former personal lawyer of Mr Trump's who was convicted of tax evasion and campaign finance violations, sharing a link to the report.

Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY have reportedly not commented to the media and have yet to issue a news release about the raid.

His later efforts to win higher office, in the U.S. Senate and the Republican nomination for the White House, floundered.

Officials in the Deputy Attorney-General's office raised concerns about both the scope of the request, which they thought would contain communications that could be covered by legal privilege between Mr Giuliani and Mr Trump, and the method of obtaining the records, three of the people said. "I didn't use most of it", Solomon said of Giuliani. Everything was sitting "in plain view", he said.

In recent years, Giuliani monetized his reputation for security and policing into lucrative side ventures.

The issue was widely expected to be revisited by the Justice Department once U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland assumed office.

Mr Garland was confirmed last month and Deputy Attorney-General Lisa Monaco was confirmed to her position and sworn in last week.

It's odd that prosecutors would execute a search warrant on a lawyer, although Manhattan federal prosecutors have done so before.
