Fact Check: Georgia Vs. Colorado On Mail-In Voting, IDs, Lines

Atlanta about Major League Baseball's decision to pull the 2021 All Star Game from Atlanta over the league's objection to a new Georgia voting law

In the days in between - as Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred consulted with players, owners, union leaders, team officials and sponsors - Atlanta-based corporate giants Coca-Cola and Delta denounced the new law as "unacceptable", and President Biden said he would "strongly support" moving the game out of Atlanta.

Colorado, the new home of MLB's 2021 All-Star Game, saw more than 21,000 ballots disqualified in 2016 over voter-identification issues, according to a report.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp even made the erroneous claim about photo IDs during an appearance on Fox News.

Georgia does allow first-time voters to use documents such as utility bills, bank statements and government documents that show the person's name and address as identification if they were not able to prove residency when they first applied to vote.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on Monday wrote a letter to Manfred in which he criticized the commissioner's action in response to a new Georgia law that Republicans claim will help to prevent election fraud but that critics argue will make it harder for people of color to vote. "So what I'm being told, they also have a photo ID requirement".

Kemp also called President Biden's appearance at the NCAA championship game in IN "so hypocritical" as the governor said the state is "the birthplace for the photo ID requirement". The options include common identification cards like a driver's license, US passport or government employee ID - but Colorado also accepts Medicare and Medicaid cards, college IDs, utility bills, bank statements and paychecks. "If you are voting by mail for the first time, you may also need to provide a photocopy of your identification when you return your mail ballot", the Colorado secretary of state's website explains.

Colorado does not require identification for mail voting once a person is registered.

Among the most controversial changes made by Georgia's new election law is to require voter ID for absentee ballots - a requirement that doesn't exist in Colorado, which uses signature verification to validate mail-in ballots.

In addition to appearing hypocritical, MLB's decision may have a disproportionate effect on minority-owned businesses in Atlanta, which will lose revenues from the All-Star Game to Denver, Colorado.

Baseball's 91st Midsummer Classic is scheduled on Tuesday, July 13, at the Colorado Rockies' Coors Field.
