Passengers from India not allowed in UAE from April 25 Media reports

Ontario's government is "pleading" with Ottawa to ban travel from India.

The travel ban includes inbound transit passengers with exception of transit flights coming to the UAE and heading to India, the GCAA said in a statement on Thursday. This list will be updated as more news comes in.

The red list status, which is effective from 4 am local time on Friday, came amid a spike in coronavirus infections in India and also resulted in British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelling his planned visit to New Delhi on April 26.

Heathrow Airport told the BBC that it refused airlines' request for extra flights because it was anxious about long lines at passport control. India, she said, may present a special case.

The UK had made a decision to put India on its travel "red-list" after 103 new cases of the double mutant variant were detected in Britain.

Even as the number of new COVID-19 cases continues to rise setting a new record every day, a new threat has emerged in form of a triple mutant variant of the coronavirus.

The US' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had on Tuesday issued travel recommendations for fully vaccinated travellers.

The State Department spokesperson, responding to a question, said Secretary of State, Tony Blinken and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed the issue during a phone call on Monday.

He's also calling for more action to prevent people from getting around the rules by trying to enter Canada from other countries, as well as implement "enhanced screening and quarantine measures" for people who have either been to a COVID-19 hotspot or who have tested positive for these variants.

A briefing document drawn up by officials at Public Health England shows that between March 25 and April 7, a total of 3,345 arrivals from India were registered in United Kingdom border travel data.

Canada is considering a halt to air travel from India, especially after a variant of interest first seen in that country was detected in Canada.

"Travellers from high-risk countries, including India, will be required to have a PCR Covid-19 test 72 hours prior to leaving the last port they are in before travelling to Australia", the report says.
