Tucker Carlson says Rep. Matt Gaetz's appearance was 'weirdest interview' ever

The Justice Department is investigating whether Rep. Matt Gaetz, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, had a possible sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said Wednesday that House Republicans would support removing Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) from his committee assignments if allegations related to a Department of Justice investigation are true.

"I don't remember the woman you are speaking of or the context at all, honestly", Carlson cut in to say, visibly stunned.

Matt Gaetz, a congressman from Florida, confirmed he was the subject of the Department of Justice investigation but denied that he had ever had a relationship with underage girls. 'The New York Times is running a story that I have traveled with a 17-year-old woman and that is verifiably false.

In 2017, Gaetz was the only member of Congress to vote against increasing federal funds to fight human trafficking.

"I'm not the only person on screen right now who's been falsely accused of a bad sex act", the lawmaker told Tucker Carlson.

The Times reports that the probe first began in the waning days of the Trump administration, and that the investigation is part of a broader look into an ally of Gaetz's named Joel Greenberg, a former Florida county official who was indicted on charges including sex trafficking of a child.

Mr Gaetz said his family has been cooperating with the FBI and that he and his father had been wearing a recording device at the bureau's request "to catch these criminals". The host said that because "there's always more than you read in the newspaper", he and his producers had immediately called the Florida lawmaker to come onto the show and "tell us more" about the federal probe.

Gaetz told Axios that any "allegations of sexual misconduct against" him were "false". "I have a suspicion that someone is trying to recategorize my generosity to ex-girlfriends as something more untoward".

"I believe that there are people at the Department of Justice who are trying to criminalize my sexual conduct, you know when I was a single guy", he reportedly said.

The three NYT sources also said that the investigation is part of a broader investigation into a political ally, a local official in Florida named Joel Greenberg, who was indicted previous year on charges including sex trafficking of a child and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.

He alleged that the woman had been "threatened" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and told "she could face trouble" if she didn't confess to authorities that Gaetz was involved in a "pay-for-play scheme". I've been, you know, generous as a partner.

Gaetz went on to name the DOJ official he claimed was trying to extort him as David McGee, a former DOJ prosecutor. "You know, I've paid for flights, for hotel rooms". "No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation".

Gaetz has not been charged with a crime. "He should not be sitting on a Congressional Committee with oversight over the DOJ while the Department is investigating him", Lieu tweeted immediately following the story.
