The Chinese dismissed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan as "condescending".

Yang said: "I think we thought too well of the United States".

US State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter reiterated calls for China to release the two men, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, from "arbitrary and unacceptable" detention during a regular briefing in Washington.

The official Xinhua News Agency said that following talks in Alaska, China and the United States had made a decision to set up a working group on climate change and hold talks "to facilitate activities of. diplomatic and consular missions" and on issues related to each other's journalists. For instance, the two sides are committed to strengthening dialogue and cooperation in the field of climate change and will establish a joint working group on that subject.

While the report said both countries agreed to hold talks on consular missions and journalists, it did not mention the previous disputes.

Mr Yang and Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, have said previously they want a fresh start in US-China relations. "In China, according to opinion polls, the leaders of China have the wide support of the Chinese people", he said. The comments were lapped up on China's heavily censored social media, with posts citing Yang accumulating hundreds of thousands of likes in a matter of hours.

The US side should take a right approach to China's political system and development path, its influence on the world as well as its major policies.

Blinken told reporters after the Alaska talks ended Friday night that USA diplomats "knew going in that there are a number of areas where we are fundamentally at odds, including China's actions in Xinjiang, with regard to Hong Kong, Tibet, increasingly Taiwan, as well as actions that it's taking in cyberspace". On human rights, we hope that the United States will do better on human rights.

"It's probable that after this Anchorage diplomat summit, Sino-American relations may deteriorate further", Shi said. Sometimes they'll include recommendations for other related newsletters or services we offer.

The talks appeared to yield no diplomatic breakthroughs - as expected - but the bitter rivalry on display suggested the two countries had little common ground to reset relations that have sunk to the lowest level in decades. This situation should not continue any longer.

Forming cliques, turning back the wheel of history, inciting ideological divisions, or instigating confrontation will lead to nowhere.

China is ready to work with the United States to uphold true multilateralism, and provide more public goods with better quality for the worldwide community.

As the rivalry between the two nations escalates, the climate crisis is seen as one area that might force Beijing and Washington to join forces.

Afterward, the United States criticized the Chinese side for violating an agreed-upon two-minute time limit for opening statements.

The Chinese side also made it clear to the United States side that sovereignty and territorial integrity are major issues of principle, said Wang, stressing that the USA side should not underestimate China's determination to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests, nor should it undrerestimate the Chinese people's will to safeguard national dignity and legitimate rights and interests.
