In the most caustic sign yet of deepening GOP divisions, former President Donald Trump blistered Mitch McConnell as a "political hack" on Tuesday, days after the Senate's top Republican denounced him as the inciter of U.S. Capitol attack.

"Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again", he added.

McConnell has repeatedly rebuked Trump's incitement of the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, though he voted to acquit the former President of the charge. While the House of Representatives impeached Trump on January 13, the Senate trial didn't begin until February 9, 20 days after Trump left the presidency.

Despite the potshot at McConnell's family and the insulting characterization of his personality, Trump wanted to lob harsher personal attacks at McConnell, according to a source familiar with Trump's desires.

Jason Miller, a Trump advisor who Politico reported had a hand in crafting the statement, denied in an email to Insider that the earlier draft mocking McConnell exists.

"Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First".

The former president's statement promises to further fuel an intraparty struggle.

Donald Trump has launched a bitter and personal attack on one of his party's senior leaders in an extraordinary statement since being acquitted in the Senate impeachment trial last week.

Trump asserted Tuesday that McConnell's shortcomings had contributed to the party's loss of the Senate majority and alluded to his baseless claims of election fraud. "I remind everybody, Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment was don't speak ill of fellow Republicans", Graham said.

"As much as the left wants to act like Republicans are only QAnon supporters, part of the problem is when I hear that, I automatically get very tribal", Ms.

He even noted that though Trump is now out of office, he remains subject to the country's criminal and civil laws.

Then Tuesday, Rep. Bennie Thompson of MS filed a suit against Giuliani, Trump, and two extremist groups in connection to the Capitol insurrection. "His behavior during and after the chaos was also unconscionable, from attacking Vice President Mike Pence during the riot to praising the criminals after it ended".

Atlanta prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into whether Trump attempted to overturn his election loss in Georgia, including a January 2 phone call in which he urged the state's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" enough votes to reverse Biden's narrow victory. "The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president".

Graham has been one of Trump's most ardent defenders throughout his presidency and beyond, and after listing what he perceives to be Trump's accomplishments in office, he reminded Trump how important McConnell was to his presidency, from pushing through tax cuts to rushing Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation through the Senate.
