Post-COVID-19 Patients Likely Protected for 6 Months

Researchers have discovered a novel antiviral property of a drug that could have major implications in how future pandemics - including COVID-19 - are managed.

According to the New York Post, people in that age category accounted for 72% of the cases after schools reopened in October, while less than 5 % came from children and less than 10% came from teenagers.

It said two of Tuesday's four cases had been reclassified as under investigation, as they were likely to be historical cases which might have previously been reported overseas.

One of the cases had travelled to New Zealand via Singapore, another from the United States.

Among participants who had tested positive for previous COVID-19 infection, 99% retained antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 for three months, the results showed. They are no longer infectious, the Ministry of Health said.

The seafarer arrived in New Zealand on January 24 and was given a departure swab ahead of shore leave.

She added that both the total number of cases of the variant and the share of the total positive tests was relatively low compared to many European countries. They will be tested at the start and end of their quarantine to detect asymptomatic cases.

The ministry said 12 previously reported cases had now recovered.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in New Zealand since the pandemic began is 1952.

The seven-day rolling average up to yesterday is 5342 tests processed.

"Since midday yesterday New Zealanders have scanned 692,042 times. We thank all New Zealanders for their efforts to scan, scan, scan", the Health Ministry said in a statement.

It comes as moves are made to tighten protocols in our managed isolation facilities which have seen movement curtailed after a community outbreak stemming from Auckland's Pullman.

However, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield and Medsafe Group Manager Chris James will speak to media about plans for New Zealand's Covid-19 at 2.45pm.

But they did not include the 13 worldwide mariners staying in a Christchurch managed isolation facility, who were thought to have contracted Covid-19 overseas.

There are now nearly 2.55 million registered Covid Tracer app users in New Zealand.
