Armed bystanders stopped the mass shooting that left three people dead, including the suspect, and two injured down the road from the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport Saturday afternoon, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in the suburb of Metairie around 2:50 p.m. (2050 GMT), according to a news release from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

While the events of the shooting remain under investigation, police said it appears that a suspect shot and killed two people inside the shooting range before being confronted and shot by multiple others outside. Two others were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Shay O'Connor, a WDSU reporter on the scene, tweeted at least three people were dead.

It's unclear if the good samaritans are employees of the gun shop or customers.

NBC reports that the fight broke out after a customer entered the gun outlet with a loaded gun that was unholstered.
