Covid: Melbourne lockdown to end after quarantine outbreak controlled

The state had already endured two previous lockdowns - including a four-month shutdown of its state capital Melbourne - due to failures in the hotel quarantine scheme.

This comes as the state recorded zero new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, after nearly 40,000 test results were recorded Tuesday.

"The crowd will be capped at 7,477 for each session, which is approximately 50 percent capacity, " Tiley added.

Public outdoor gatherings are also limited to 20 people, down from 30.

Hospitality, retail and reopen and religious gatherings and ceremonies will resume with density limits the same as before the latest lockdown.

The five-day stay-at-home order now appears to have contained the outbreak, which centred on a hotel near Melbourne airport, to 19 people.

The outbreak now stands at 19 cases, while nearly 3,500 close contacts remain in isolation.

Commenting on the strain, Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said it's been proven to spread rapidly. There are literally thousands of people who've been potentially exposed to infectious cases.

"We do not rule those out but if we do see those, it is likely to be in the personal close contacts of family members, of associated households who have been isolated and quarantining for some substantial period now. They need to not be complacent", he said on Wednesday.

"We'll still have to get tested if we have symptoms".

"That is exactly what we said we needed and exactly what we said would work". Andrews said meetings would be held later Wednesday to determine "a safe number" of attendees for the event.

"But if it goes beyond that, we'll be up for that".

Reason Party leader MP Fiona Patten said in a statement on Wednesday she would vote against the bill and urged the government to bring forward legislation specific to the pandemic.

Andrews confirmed that all of these restrictions will be in place until at least Friday, February 26th, when they will be reviewed.

Australia has reported a total of just under 29,000 Covid-19 cases and 909 deaths, with border closures and speedy tracking systems helping keep numbers relatively low compared with other developed countries.

The premier confirmed the government is looking at constructing purpose-built quarantine accommodation, based on the Howard Springs facility in the Northern Territory.
