Trump rewards GOP ally Rep. Jim Jordan with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Bill Belichick turns down Presidential Medal of Freedom citing Capitol insurrection as reason

Belichick's statement helps him keep his locker room, while distancing him from a president who in 2017 reacted to National Football League players taking a knee with, "Wouldn't you love to see one of these National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you'd say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation's values, freedom and democracy", Belichick said in a statement.

Politico reports that Belichick had been receiving calls from people urging him to decline the award because of last week's riot by Trump supporters in the nation's Capitol.

Arguably one of the most famous Croatian-Americans, Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl victor with the New England Patriots and a known Trump supporter and friend, has refused to accept the Presidental Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the Capitol Riots.

News that Belichick was being lined up for the Medal of Freedom sparked widespread negative reaction on social media.

It was reported Sunday that President Donald Trump meant to bestow the highest civilian honor in the United States to Belichick on Thursday. Five people died as a result of the chaos, including a US Capitol Police officer.

Belichick was reportedly scheduled to receive the medal in a Thursday ceremony in the United States.

It's noteworthy that the coach cited the Patriots' social justice conversations in his statement, as Belichick also talked about their impact at length in his season-ending press conference without any sort of prompting. Last week, he presented the medal to another ally, U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes of California, and golfing greats Babe Zaharias, Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player.

Belichick has served on Trump's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition since 2018, according to ESPN. Belichick wrote Trump a love note and agreed to let him read it to voters in New Hampshire on the eve of the 2016 election.

Belichick has won six Super Bowl championships with the Patriots.

His rejection of the honour comes as politicians from Belichick's state of MA called for him to turn it down.
