Dr Jeannette Young said the man has been in quarantine since January 7 and additional contact tracing is now underway Genome sequencing is also underway and it is likely to be the United Kingdom variant.

"We recognise the decision was made very swiftly", she said.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk revealed on Monday that additional restrictions would remain in place for the next 10 days to ensure the strain does not re-emerge in the community.

"Genome sequencing is underway, however it's likely to be the United Kingdom variant", the state's top doctor said.

It is not known what impact the new case will have on other states and territories' restrictions on people travelling from Greater Brisbane.

From 6pm Monday until 1am January 22, residents of Greater Brisbane, which includes Ipswich, Logan, Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Redlands, will still need to wear a mask in certain locations.

The new case was confirmed by authorities last night and there has been no change to the restrictions in place for Greater Brisbane following the lifting of the three-day lockdown.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that the lockdown is set to end.

Ms D'Ath said restrictions would continue until 1am on January 22 with masks required for people living in Greater Brisbane at shopping centres and cinemas. They will not need to be worn while at home, while in a private vehicle or when someone is outdoors and they are a safe distance from others - such as walking the dog or exercising.

An urgent public health alert was issued late on Saturday evening, ordering anyone who had visited Coles at Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown on January 5, 7.30am-8am, or Woolworths Calamvale North on January 3, 11am-noon to get tested and quarantine for 14 days, regardless of the test result.

"I'm not sure we've found everyone who attended those three venues yet", Dr Young said.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland's Amanda Rohan said the lockdown and the new rules were a setback for businesses during the crucial school holiday trading period.

She urged people to get out and support businesses while abiding by the new rules.

"When in doubt wear a mask", Palaszczuk said.

Ms Palaszczuk insisted the lockdown was not an over-reaction, pointing to the support from National Cabinet and the AHPPC, as she described the United Kingdom virus variant as a "whole new ball game".

He said the police probe into the quarantine breach was crucial so that the overall system can be strengthened and future mistakes minimised.

"Like most elite events a year ago which saw Queensland host several sporting bubbles, COVID-19 has made preparing for Friday's Test anything but routine".

There are four new cases in hotel quarantine.

Two of those people had travelled to the United Kingdom, but Dr Young said it was too early to know if they had the more contagious strain of the virus.

Masks will be mandatory when entering, leaving and moving around the stadium.

Two sites were added to the contact tracing list after the quarantine hotel cleaner's partner tested positive on Monday.

She then flew into Brisbane at 11pm on January 5 on a Jetstar JQ570 flight.
