PSG win for first time under Pochettino

Paris Saint-Germain got their hands on the Trophee des Champions on Wednesday evening as they beat Marseille 2-1.

Substitutes Mauro Icardi and Pablo Sarabia added late goals for PSG who would have gone top on goal difference had Lyon not recovered from 2-0 down to earn a point at Rennes and extend their unbeaten run to 16 games. "I hope to win more titles, but the first will always be special", said Pochettino.

"We will decide tomorrow (Wednesday) if he plays or starts on the bench", PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino said at a virtual press conference ahead of the game. This season's edition was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Marseille, meanwhile, have won just one of their last four French top-flight tussles and go into this cup clash on the back of dour 0-0 draw at relegation-threatened Dijon.

Brazilian Neymar, 28, was stretchered off the field with an ankle injury following a heavy challenge from Thiago Mendes in PSG s home Ligue 1 defeat to Lyon last month.

Icardi thought he had given PSG the lead with a 22nd minute tap-in, only to have the goal ruled out for offside after Kylian Mbappe strayed past Marseille's back line to collect Leandro Paredes' defence-splitting pass.

Neymar replaced Angel Di Maria in the 65th minute for his first appearance in 2021. "What matters more to us than the trophy itself is winning the game".

Neymar returned to action in the 65th minute and was immediately targeted by Gonzalez, the Argentine fouling the superstar attacker several times in what looked like a continuation of the pair's spat.

Neymar was one of three PSG players sent off in an ugly ending to PSG's most recent meeting with Marseille, who finished with nine men.

Marseille pulled a goal back in Wednesday's encounter thanks to a Dimitri Payet strike in the 89th minute but they were unable to complete their comeback.
