NT changes border rules as Queensland ends lockdown

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young joined Ms Palaszczuk this morning and said the restrictions mirrored those in other states, insisting it was important that the Greater Brisbane region came out of the lockdown "carefully and sensibly".

Queensland is on high alert after a cleaner at one of Brisbane's quarantine hotels was initially diagnosed with the United Kingdom virus strain.

You do not have to wear a mask if you are socially-distanced from your colleagues at the office.

"I'm not sure we've found everyone who attended those three venues yet", Dr Young said.

But Queensland health authorities were not letting their guard down just yet, with Dr Young urging anyone who attended the same locations as the cleaner to still get tested.

"We know this particular variant of COVID-19 is more contagious, so this result is unsurprising", she said.

Australia's third-largest city of Brisbane was in its first day of a snap lockdown yesterday, with officials elsewhere on "high alert" over the emergence of more contagious strains of Covid-19.

Health authorities urged residents living in Maleny to watch for symptoms after a Victorian woman - also carrying the United Kingdom variant of coronavirus - travelled there to visit her parents.

Other restrictions on visits to hospitals, aged care, disability accommodation and prisons will still remain while the Gabba cricket Test is also due to go ahead on January 15, but spectator capacity at the ground will be capped at 50 per cent.

"Can I thank people in the greater Brisbane region for responding in the way that they did, it has been absolutely truly remarkable", Ms Palaszczuk told reporters on Monday.

Testing of close contacts of the man and woman will continue this week.

She said 172 had already tested negative and the others were either getting tested or awaiting results.

United played Brisbane Roar in Redcliffe on Thursday night and arrived back in Canberra late on Friday before Greater Brisbane went into a three-day lockdown.

"This is a really important reminder".

Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said there had been much better behaviour at retail outlets after supermarkets were inundated by panic buyers when the lockdown was announced on Friday.

Finally, Victoria recorded no new local cases for the fourth consecutive day.

Dr Young called for people to continue to get tested, particularly in the Calamvale North and Algester areas after 18,904 tests were conducted on Sunday.

There are four new cases in hotel quarantine.

Two of those people had travelled to the United Kingdom, but Dr Young said it was too early to know if they had the more contagious strain of the virus.

It is not known what impact the new case will have on other states and territories' restrictions on people travelling from Greater Brisbane.

The NT Government is due to hold a press conference this afternoon.

Tasmania also allowed several thousand people who had arrived from Greater Brisbane before 9am on 8 January out of quarantine on Monday.
