Liverpool transfers: Why club won't sign a new centre-back

Fabrizio Romano

"We look at how the club's reported targets have performed this season, what their attributes are, and whether a deal may be possible for any of them in January".

Liverpool centre-back van Dijk has been out since a 2-2 draw with Everton in October, when he sustained a serious knee ligament injury following a heavy challenge from Jordan Pickford.

"He is in a good way but if it will be United or a few days later, I don't know".

Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to "fight against the world" as he insisted Liverpool's blip in form has not left him anxious.

"Aston Villa can confirm that the Club has closed its Bodymoor Heath training ground after a significant Coronavirus outbreak".

"I can't really say anything about that, but you can imagine, six months ago we talked about how much all football clubs struggle and thank God we could keep going, and it helped all the clubs as well".

"There might be, I don't know, there might be some clubs who have absolutely no financial problems, but this club always was and always will be, with these owners, very responsible with the things we do".

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said signing a center-back this month was "of paramount importance" but Klopp is unwilling to spend just for the sake of it.

Liverpool play Southampton on January 4 (watch live, 3pm ET on NBCSN and online via NBCSports.com), and Klopp knows there are plenty of twists and turns ahead in the title race.

Liverpool's Friday night game kicks off at 7:45pm and will be broadcast live on BT Sport. That is what we try all the time. "It's a very important competition, so we will try to win that".

Robertson and Liverpool haven't hit their usual heights in recent matches. We need some fresh legs.

A statement issued by Villa yesterday said: 'A large number of first-team players and staff returned positive tests after being routinely tested on Monday and immediately went into isolation. "If we don't, we stay with this one".

Despite a desire to get several first team players back in to form, it is likely that the reds will make wholesale changes to the line up which could give another chance to the likes of Takumi Minamino who sit just outside the first choice XI.

United have scored 12 of their last 13, thanks to Bruno Fernandes and back-up taker Marcus Rashford, but only 30 out of 41 since Klopp came to the Premier League - partly due to a run of one successful conversion from five by Rashford, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial in 2019.
