6.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Chile's Santiago

The quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers at 11:45 p.m. local time (02:45 GMT Tuesday), the USGS said.

No tsunami warning has been issued for the quake.

A powerful natural disaster struck in northwestern Argentina near the border with Chile, shaking people in both countries, but there were no early reports of damage or injuries. The depth of the strong quake was recorded to be 20 km by PTWC.

The US Geological Survey said the tremor on late Monday had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4.

A magnitude 5.0 aftershock took place nearby about 15 minutes later, according to the agency.

"Many neighbours came down from the buildings and houses, went out into the street". Addressing reporters in a press conference, he said that power cuts have been noticed at some locations and some homes have experienced damage in the Caucete town.

Chile's capital Santiago felt the quake too.

Electricity also failed in some areas and goods were shaken from supermarket shelves, reports said.

"Let's put into practice all the measures that we have learned to prevent incidents, while we are committed to knowing the impact of the (earthquake) to collaborate in everything necessary", he tweeted. Chilean officials said there were no damage reported in that nation.
