Amazon launches mobile-only Prime Video subscription in India

Amazon Prime Video follows Netflix to launch an India first mobile-only plan starting at ₹89

Prime Video Mobile Edition is a single-user mobile-only plan, providing SD (standard definition) quality streaming to customers which is created especially for a mobile-first country like India, Amazon said in a statement. The subscription service starts at INR 89 ($1.22) per single user and offers access to standard definition (SD) content for 28 days with 6GB of mobile data bundled in the subscription.

Amazon and Airtel say that once the 30-day free trial is over, Airtel prepaid users can choose from a variety of prepaid plans and bundles to subscribe to the Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition plan. Amazon has partnered with Airtel, with the latter's prepaid users getting a free 30-day trial for the Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition subscription with all prepaid bundles. "Given high mobile broadband penetration in the country, the mobile phone has become one of the most widely used streaming devices", said Jay Marine, Vice President, Amazon Prime Video Worldwide.

The video streaming major has partnered with Airtel to roll out the offering to millions of prepaid customers of the telecom major. "Powered by affordable data, smartphones have become the preferred screen for entertainment in India", Amazon Prime Video India Director and Country General Manager Gaurav Gandhi said. Interested Airtel users can buy these plans via Airtel Thanks app or offline Airtel stores. There are also two more subscription options that allow access to the full Amazon Prime Video subscription.

Amazon already offers 1 year of free Prime membership with Airtel's postpaid plans.

Do note that one will not get other Amazon Prime benefits with these mobile-only plans. But it will be the first time that Amazon's Prime services are being offered at the most affordable rates. Buoyed by this response, we want to double-down by offering our much-loved entertainment content to an even larger base of Indian customers. The Rs 131 recharge bundles the Amazon Prime membership for 30 days that includes Prime Video as well as the shopping, shipping and ad-free Amazon Music benefits.
