'Saved By The Bell' Reboot Mocks Selena Gomez's Lupus, Fans Furiated

Francia Raisa and Selena Gomez

Later on November 28, Peacock, UTV, and Saved By The Bell executive producers issued a statement regarding the backlash.

"We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena's health".

The show's creators Peacock TV apologised after fans fumed about the episode, with "Respect Selena Gomez" trending worldwide on Twitter.

A later scene in the same episode shows a school wall scrawled with graffiti that reads: "Does Selena Gomez even have kidneys?". One girl is adamant that Justin Bieber's mom is the other counter's with Demi Lovato. God, I wish I had my phone so I could test it out", while the second student replies "Try what?

"Prove what? That you're an idiot?" They're best friends, just like you and I were.

The woman who donated one of her kidneys to Selena Gomez is speaking up about a very uncool time in the pop star's life. In September 2017, the singer explained her withdrawal from all public events by revealing that she'd received a kidney transplant from her friend, actress Francia Raisa. Both Gomez and Raisa have opened up about the physical and mental health complications they experienced following the operation.

One fan takes to Twitter, writing, "that's disgusting".

"Appreciate the apology but let's not forget about the donors that potentially felt offended and dismissed from the spray paint written on the wall", the actress tweeted. For the unversed, Selena underwent a transplant in 2017. "You are so courageous and your selfless act is very much appreciated and valued!"

The "Lose You To Love Me" singer has previously stated she wanted to come forward with her illness to spread awareness of the autoimmune disease and become an advocate. "So scared that a few days prior to her kidney surgery Selena wrote to her fans thanking them for their support & that they are watched over incase she didn't make it. Stop making fun of her health issues".

"There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my attractive friend Francia Raísa", Gomez said. The thought of asking someone to do that was really hard for me.
