Microsoft will allow employees to stay remote permanently

As The Verge reported, Microsoft's employees who chose to work remotely on a permanent basis will be allowed to move across the country if they choose, and while it won't cover the costs of hauling across the United States, the company did offer to cover the home office expenses for those remote workers.

This group, as Microsoft explains, includes people handling roles that require regular access to hardware labs and data centers available in Microsoft's offices, and for in-person training.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced companies around the world to let employees work from home.

"For others, whose work can be done entirely remote, there are options to relocate â€" even internationally â€" if approved.

A spokesperson for Microsoft Ireland confirmed the new work-from-home policy.

The new policy is being described internally as a "hybrid model" that emphasises flexibility.

According to Hogan, the guidance was released to help employees make informed decisions around scenarios that could include changes to their work site, work location or work hours once offices are open without any COVID-19 restrictions.

"While part-time continues to be subject to manager approval, our guidance is meant to facilitate an open conversation between a manager and employee regarding considerations", she said.

But some jobs that require the physical presence of employees at the office will still require those workers to show up. Ford and Target also revealed this week that their employees will be allowed to work remotely until at least July 2021.

Spotify followed Twitter and Facebook's lead to allow staffers to work from home until the end of the year.

Before the pandemic only 2 percent of workers were remote full-time, according to Bloom.

'Employees who work in a role that can effectively be done from home are welcome to do so until January 8th. Microsoft had earlier announced that it is giving its employees the option to work from home through October. Moving forward, it is our goal to offer as much flexibility as possible to support individual workstyles, while balancing business needs and ensuring we live our culture.

Microsoft has given staff the option of working from home permanently, following in the footsteps of rivals Facebook and Twitter, which have also offered a permanent remote-working option.

The outlier among tech giants was Apple, which asked employees to start returning to the office in June.

Microsoft said staff will be allowed to relocate within the country where they work with approval, or may seek to relocate internationally if remote working is viable from overseas in their role.

In a bid to address it, the company launched the "virtual commute" to aid employees transition from work to home life.
