Asked by CNN's Jake Tapper how many Americans would need to be vaccinated for life to return to normal and when that might happen, Slaoui said that about 70 percent of the USA population would have to be immunized "for true herd immunity".

"Our plan is to be able to ship vaccines to the immunization sites within 24 hours of the approval", Moncef Slaoui, the chief scientist advisor for Trump's Operation Warp Speed, told CNN.

Slaoui said he and his family would be "happy" to receive the treatment.

Drugmaker Pfizer on Friday filed a request with the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization of its coronavirus vaccine. Each state will decide who gets the vaccine first with the recommendation that priority be given to health care workers, front-line workers and the elderly who face the highest risks of dying from the virus. Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that dozens of other countries have also expressed their wish to buy Russian COVID vaccines, including EpiVacCorona, that was registered in October.

"Normally, with the level of efficacy we have, 95%, 70% or so of the population being immunized would allow for true herd immunity to take place", he said.

Incoming White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said it was crucial to have a seamless flow of information between Mr Trump's coronavirus experts and Mr Biden's transition team to avoid delays in distribution after Mr Biden takes office on 20 January. A Gallup poll from Tuesday showed that 58 percent of Americans said they would get a coronavirus vaccine and 42 percent said they wouldn't.

However, Dr. Anthony Fauci doesn't believe that life can be "normal" again around May. "The vaccines have been developed as thoroughly and as scientifically as ever", he said.

The number of U.S. coronavirus cases has surpassed 12 million and rose by more than 1 million cases in less than a week for the first time.
